Announcement: MPI Ditches License Plate Validation Stickers

January 16th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Beginning on March 1, 2016, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) will begin phasing out license plate validation stickers. Instead, police officers will use scanners to read license plates and obtain information about vehicle registration and insurance.

Currently, drivers must apply validation stickers to the bottom of their license plates. However, according to MPI’s news release, Autopac agents will stop issuing these stickers after February. MPI sees the change as a necessary update to an outdated process.

When Manitoba drivers renew their Autopac policies, they will be given a blank sticker to cover up their validation stickers. Drivers installing new plates will not need to apply a sticker of any kind.

Given that MPI operates on a five-year renewal system, license plate validation stickers will not be fully eliminated until 2021.
