Accordian Fire Lights Up Gander Seniors’ Home

October 22nd, 2015  |  Canadian Business

A misplaced accordion wreaked havoc earlier this week when it started smoking in a Gander seniors’ centre, prompting an emergency fire response to the complex.

When fire crews arrived, they ensured everyone was safe and saw a small amount of smoke drifting in one of the rooms.

Firefighters quickly found the source of all the fuss, an accordion that had been left leaning against an electric heater and melted.

Adison Quilty, a member of Gander Fire and Rescue, told CBC that it was one of the strangest calls he had ever responded too.

"It was unusual," said Quilty.

According to reports, the accordion started to melt after an errant accordion player left it lying too close to the radiator.

"The heat from the heater eventually melted the buttons and created a little bit of smoke in the room," Quilty said.

The incident serves as a reminder that as winter comes, Canadians will need to more aware of fire hazards this festive season.

"We tell people to keep a minimum of 18 inches clearance around electrical heaters at all times," said Quilty. "Just in case things like this fall up against a heater or anything like that overnight."
