3 ways to help out displaced Fort McMurray residents

May 4th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

One of the largest fires in Canadian history has been raging in and around Fort McMurray, Alberta all week, tearing down hundreds of buildings and displacing almost 100,000 residents. While the situation is very far from being over, here’s how you can help the relief effort.

Volunteering

WIth so many people needing help, one of the best things you can do if you’re located near the area is volunteer your time directly to the effort. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is taking applications through its website.

Hosting refugees

Many people have lost their homes to the fire and temporary shelters are not always the most comfortable spaces to live in. If you have extra space, you can help take some pressure off of shelters and make refugees feel at home in your own house. Airbnb has waived all costs for refugees seeking a place to stay through its site. You can list your home on Airbnb here if you want to volunteer to host.

Monetary donations

You don’t need to live nearby to offer support. Donate to the Canadian Red Cross to help feed and shelter those affected by the blaze. The federal government will match all donations, making every donation twice as important.

Canadians have proven time and again the strength of the country by being there for each other. We at HUB Insurance Hunter would like to thank all those who are doing their best to keep a bad situation from getting worse and encourage everyone to keep Fort McMurray in their thoughts.
