You can’t choose your neighbours, but you can choose how to deal with them

January 25th, 2015  |  Home Insurance

Your neighbours can be a fantastic resource: they can watch your pets for you when you’re out of town, collect your mail, or even help you to maintain your yard. But trouble with your neighbour can make for a very unpleasant situation for everyone involved. That’s why it’s important to treat your neighbours well, right from the start. So let’s look at some different types of neighbours and how you can handle them.

The Jones'

You’re pretty sure that they are the people that everyone on the block (you included) are trying to keep up with. They have a perfect lawn, a luxury car parked in the driveway, and seem to always have extra funds for an addition on their home. You don’t want to compare yourself to them, but who wouldn’t?

What to do:We’ve all heard that comparison is the thief of joy, but this is the time to remember it. Not everyone’s life is reduced to only the things you see. Remember the good things in your own life. After all, you never know what goes on behind closed doors.

The home de-valuers

They are nice. In fact, they’re quite friendly. But they also don’t mow their lawn or weed their garden, have overgrown shrubs, haven’t repainted their porch, and have a rusted out car permanently parked in the driveway. Their house is basically the eyesore of the street, and they’re right next door.

What to do:You said yourself they were nice enough, so why not communicate with them? Maybe they are working extra shifts and haven’t got the time to mow the lawn, or maybe they simply have too much going on in their lives to keep up with the yard work. Starting a friendly and helpful conversation is a great way to help improve your surroundings and maybe even to help someone in need.

The rude neighbours

They aren’t too rich, and they aren’t too messy, but they also aren’t too friendly. They keep to themselves and don’t talk to anyone. In fact, after five years you still aren’t even sure of their names.

What to do:No one says you have to be best friends with your neighbours, but a little friendliness can go a long way. A wave, a smile or a quick hello can really make the difference in your relationship, especially if you’re ever in a situation where you need to call on them for anything.

You can’t choose your family, or your neighbours, but you can make the best of the situation. A kind word here and there and an effort from everyone can make your neighbourhood a much better place to live.
