The WORST Cars for Auto Insurance

November 15th, 2015  |  Auto Insurance

Car insurance is one of the few things that are shared by all Canadians – in addition to unpleasant weather and much more pleasant health coverage. Car insurance sits somewhere in the middle of that pleasantry scale. While I’m sure nobody loves paying premiums, the reality is that car insurance definitely comes in handy in a country where accidents can happen quickly.

Insurance premiums are determined by every company differently based on their own internal data and classification systems. As such there is no tried and true way to tell you which cars cost the most for insurance, but we can use the claim data to guess which cars will have higher premiums. Never forget that the driver has the biggest impact on insurance rates.

Here are some of the worst cars for auto insurance:

Luxury Brands

If you own one of these cars, chances are you aren’t too worried about paying a high insurance premium, but they can often be some of the most expensive to insure due to the higher repair costs of the vehicles and their higher value to thieves.

4WD and AWD Vehicles

All-wheel drive vehicles are known for their rugged toughness and powerful engines. They are also known as some of the worst cars for auto insurance prices.

Pickup Trucks

Pickup trucks also score way higher than the average vehicle when it comes to auto insurance. Highly valued for their abilities as workhorses, certain models of truck (Fords mostly) probably get a lot of claims for all sorts of damages thanks to the breadth of work people do with them. Any vehicle with a lot of claims is going to have higher premiums. And of course these trucks are also four-wheel drive so they are subject to the same higher claims index as other 4WD or AWD vehicles.

Popular Sedans

These cars usually top sales numbers in the country because of their affordability and practical styling, but their popularity is a double-edged sword. The more of them there are, the more claims they’ll get and that can increase premiums.

Honda Civics, Hyundai Elantras, and Toyota Corollas are three of the most popular cars in Canada, aside from pickup trucks. While the initial cost of the vehicles will be low and they are fairly good on fuel economy, keep in mind that insurance might be higher than you expect.

Sports Cars

They’re fast and they look really cool, but statistically speaking people who drive these cars speed more, drive more dangerously, and have a high likelihood to cost insurers money. It doesn’t matter if you’re driving a Porsche or a Civic Si, as long as the car is “sporty” you can expect a premium bump, making sports cars some of the worst cars for insurance.

Those are the kinds of cars you need to avoid if you’re all about saving on car insurance. Also, take a look at this if you want to see which cars ARE great for insurance.
