Why you still need to wash your car when it’s cold outside

November 2nd, 2013  |  Insurance

Even though it is cold outside and the streets will soon be filled with snow and slush, it doesn’t mean that you should stop washing your vehicle. In fact, it is still very important to keep your car clean, especially during the winter months when the roads are dirty and lined with road salt.

Road salt can damage your vehicle

Road salt is bad for your vehicle. This is one of the main reasons why you need to wash your car during the winter. If left untreated, road salt can build up underneath your vehicle, in the wheel wells, corrode your wheels and even get into the engine. When this happens you increase the chances of getting rust and having the salt eat away at the body of your vehicle.

How often should I wash my car in the winter?

Therefore, it is a good idea to have your car washed about once every 10 days or so, depending on the amount of road salt that is used in your area, among other factors. Keep in mind that if it is too cold outside, you should wait until the temperature rises as it needs to be at a level during the day to allow your vehicle dry and not have the water freeze.

Washing your car will not only keep it clean, but it will also reduce the odds of your vehicle developing rust and other issues from salt. Plus, who doesn’t love driving around is a shiny and clean vehicle, right?
