More and more young Canadians are choosing to put travel ahead of things like careers and settling down. After school many opt to branch out and see the world around them instead of fixing themselves in one place. Unfortunately however, many of these young Canadians are also opting to forgo travel insurance while they are off broadening their horizons, which can have major repercussions in the event that something goes awry while they are abroad.

Why they pass on travel insurance

Confusing process – Some young Canadians just can’t be bother to go through the process of actually getting travel insurance. Some find the steps confusing, or may not know what kind of travel insurance it is that they need.

Don’t think they need it – Because they are young and seemingly healthy, many young Canadians do not believe that they need to get travel insurance.

Why it’s a problem they pass on travel insurance

Something that young Canadians do not always realize is that that choosing not to get travel insurance can have consequences, so it is important to understand how travel insurance can save money and headaches in long run. Whether it is medically related or lost luggage, not having proper coverage can cost a substantial amount of money out of pocket, not to mention the stress of coming up with the extra funds. Having sufficient coverage will help to eliminate these problems from arising.

How best to get travel insurance

Here are the best ways to combat the three reasons that young Canadians may neglect to get travel insurance.

Cost – The best way to cut down on the cost of travel insurance is to shop around. Like with any type of insurance, some providers will be better suited to you than others. It is best to see what type of coverage is available to you and what premium costs, and possibly even discounts, various providers are able to offer you.

Confusing process – In order to help with the sometimes confusing process of obtaining travel insurance, enlist the help of a travel insurance broker. A broker does not cost anything, and is able to help you choose the right type of coverage for your needs, assist you with the application, and take you through the process in the event of a claim.

Don’t think they need it – Unfortunately, no matter how old you are something can go wrong while you are out of your home province. Any number of unforeseen events can take place, that are totally out of your control. This does not only include medical emergencies, but also situations in which your travel plans may be delayed, or your luggage is lost. Not only does travel insurance cover the cost of medical treatments and attention, but also delayed or cancelled travel plans and lost luggage.
