Why Everyone Should Travel Alone at Least Once in Their Lives

February 5th, 2015  |  Travel Insurance

Looking to get away this winter, but all of your friends have other plans, or are short on funds? Maybe you should consider travelling alone. While initially daunting, travelling alone has a lot of great perks that you may not have thought of, such as:

You’ll Learn More about Yourself

Travelling alone can help you to learn more about yourself: all that time for introspection, and the quiet time to think, and even the tough experiences are all going to help you to get to the core of who you really are. Sometimes, we get so caught up in our day-to-day lives that we don’t take the time to really reflect. Travelling by yourself will give you no other choice.

You’ll Grow as a Person

Between experiencing new cultures and new circumstances, and being forced to rely on no one but yourself, travelling alone will cause you to grow as a person and give you more confidence. Not to mention, it will give you a stronger appreciation for other cultures.

You Can Make Your Own Schedule

One of the drawbacks of travelling with someone else is that you need to compromise on what you are going to do and when. In fact, you may even have to compromise on where you’re going. Love the beach, but your husband hates the sun? Looks like you might be compromising on where to go. But when you travel alone, the only person who gets a say in what you’re doing is you. You can spend all day at the Eiffel Tower, or sleep in until noon, or eat nothing but fried chicken for your entire trip, because it’s yourtrip!

It’s Nowhere Near as Scary as You Think

Movies, TV, and pop culture can make us think that travelling alone—or doing anything alone—can be scary and daunting. But think back on all the things you’ve done solo in your life: were any of them as bad as you thought they might be? Probably not, right? Odds are that travelling alone will be much like anything else you’ve done solo: a lot scarier in your mind than it is in practice.

If all of this sounds like something that appeals to you, then consider booking a trip alone this year. You never know, you might love it so much you’ll travel solo from now on!
