When to get rental car insurance | HUB Insurance Hunter Blog

September 26th, 2011  |  Insurance

There is a big difference between car insurance coverage and rental car insurance coverage. When you opt in to the coverage with the rental car insurance company you are agreeing to coverage that will cover damage to the rental car by transferring the costs of damage to the rental company. It is important to understand that what is and is not covered will vary based on the rental company and it’s important to understand the contract before you sign it.

Perhaps the most important thing that you need to understand before you decline coverage at the rental car desk is whether or not your current car insurance policy covers you. While some people assume that they are covered by their car insurance policy, rental car coverage can depend on your policy. This type of coverage can be known as a number of names on your policy such as additional liability coverage, liability for non-owner vehicles or simply as rental vehicle insurance.

This is why it is so important to talk to your insurance company before renting a car. You don’t want to buy coverage you don’t need from the rental car company if it is part of your currentauto insurance coverage, and you want to avoid declining the coverage with the rental car company if it is not included in your car insurance policy.

If you are not sure about which insurance coverage to choose when renting a car, give us a call at HUB Insurance Hunter. We would be happy to help you discuss yourcar insurance options
