What you need to know about buying temporary insurance when you visit Canada

May 16th, 2016  |  Travel Insurance

My grandparents are visiting Canada from Europe for a month. Before they entered the country, my mom purchased temporary insurance for them. I’m spoiled because as a resident of Ontario, I’m used to being covered by OHIP for all medical emergencies. However, visitors don't enjoy this same privilege. This is why you need to purchase temporary health insurance coverage as a visitor to Canada.

Canadians have free access to health care

We talk a lot about the benefits of health insurance in Canada. We have access to health care without paying extra for it. It feels like free access, but we pay for it with our taxes. Still, it’s a lower price to pay than our neighbours to the south.

According to the Government of Canada:

“All Canadian citizens and permanent residents may apply for public health insurance. When you have it, you do not pay for most health-care services as health care is paid for through taxes. When you use public health-care services, you must show your health insurance card to the hospital or medical clinic.”

Visitors aren’t covered and they could be charged a decent sum if an emergency were to occur. If your goal is to become a Canadian, then you can look forward to the health care system.

Anyone can apply for temporary health insurance

It doesn’t matter what your age or your situation is. You can apply for temporary insurance and be covered for emergency hospital visits while you stay in Canada. This applies to all students, seniors, and even workers. You shouldn’t be intimidated by the process because you’ll be glad that you did the paper work and spent the few extra bucks on protecting yourself.

You need to look at the coverage

There are many options when it comes to health insurance. You shouldn’t simply choose the cheapest option because that won’t always be the best bet. For example, Blue Cross will cover trips to the United States and will cover up to $1,000 for accommodation if a medical situation delays your return. If you’re staying in a border town, this will benefit you because chances are that you’re going to cross over at some point. I also learned in my research that pregnancy-related costs may not be covered under some health insurance plans in Canada.

There are insurance brokers that can help you

I know that my mom dealt with an insurance broker when she was looking for the right temporary health insurance option. These insurance brokers will work with insurance companies to help you land the best coverage for your situation.

Enjoy your stay in Canada. You’ll find the folks to be friendly and the coffee delicious. And I hope that, if you do end up using our health care system, you are properly covered.
