What Happens If I Crash My Friend`s Car?

September 25th, 2011  |  Insurance

People borrow their friend’s cars all the time and while most people think it is not a big deal, it could be if you get into an accident. So, before you go borrowing your friends car, you need to understand what will happen if you crash your friends car while driving it.

Most people assume that the person driving is at fault. However, in most cases your insurance policy typically goes with the vehicle, no matter who is behind the wheel. Therefore, if your friend lends you their car, there are also essentially lending you their insurance policy as well.

This means that if you crash your friend’s car or are at fault for an accident, you will be negatively impacting their driving record – not exactly the friendliest thing to do, right? However, the accident will still go on your driving record and be included in your driving history as well, so you will not be totally off the hook if you get into a crash.

But, since the claim will be likely process through your friend’s auto insurance, they will have to carry the burden and potentially see an increase in their auto insurance rates because of your actions. While it may be possible to transfer the claim to your auto insurance, this is a topic you will have to discuss with your insurance broker to get more clarity.
