What Could Happen Without Travel Insurance? A Lot!

September 28th, 2014  |  Travel Insurance

What is the worst thing that can happen if you travel without travel insurance? Everything and anything! It is still hard to imagine that about one-third of Canadians travel aboard without travel insurance. The truth is that you never know what can happen, regardless of where, when, and how you travel. You could have travel issues 5 minutes into your trip, 5 minutes before your trip ends and anytime in between.

Considering how cost effective travel insurance is and how many options that are available to you through your travel insurance broker, it just makes sense to get travel insurance to ensure you are covered against the long list of unforeseen accidents and issues that could arise during travel. From lost luggage, travel delays, the need for a doctor visit and issues with travel reservations, there is no shortage of things that travel insurance can protect you against.

Excuses for Not Getting Travel Insurance

The excuses for not getting coverage simply do not add up when you compare it to what could happen if you don’t have coverage. Excuses include:

  • Travel insurance is too expensive
  • I am only going for a few days
  • Nothing has happened to me before
  • I don’t have time
  • I don’t know where to look for coverage

Consider these Travel Insurance Tips if you plan on travelling this fall.

What Could Happen When You Travel Without Travel Insurance

Here are three very real possibilities that could happen if you choose to travel without insurance:

  1. Pay out of pocket: Perhaps the biggest drawback from not having travel insurance is the financial risk you are exposing yourself to when travelling. Trip delays, cancellations and interruptions can cause you to lose out on the money you have paid. If you have a delay or cancellation, travel insurance can help you recover your lost money, helping to eliminate the financial risk.
  2. Expensive medical treatment: Medical treatment is expensive. If you require any form of emergency medical attention or require a hospital stay you could be out of pocket for thousands of dollars in medical bills. Depending on where you are, you could also be faced with a situation where if you cannot afford to pay for treatment or medication, you will not be treated. Travel insurance costs the cost of your medical needs.
  3. You are on your own: Without travel insurance, you are on your own to deal with any issues that arise. Lost travel documents, emergency situations and even evacuations are all things that travel insurance can help you with, should you need it.

Do you get travel insurance when you travel? If you don’t, what are your reasons for choosing not to get coverage?
