Warning - Winter Is Coming!

October 26th, 2011  |  Auto Insurance

Your sun-splashed drive home from work has turned into a dark, painful trek. The heat is on, the windows are up and the windshield fogs every time you turn the car on. And there are a lot more accidents. Yup, winter’s back.

It’s amazing that winter still catches drivers unprepared, but the numbers show that it does. Ontario insurance claims increase by an average of over 47 per cent during the winter months, and the first snowfall of the year historically accounts for the highest instance of collisions.

Winter may put drivers in arduous positions, but it’s far worse for cars. Ice, snow and extreme temperatures aren’t good for it; which is why the best idea is to get your vehicle ready for winter before it hits:

  • Keep a flashlight, a scraper, some roadsalt, a first aid kit and a shovel in the trunk, and maybe some warm clothing and blankets as well.

  • Keep an eye on tire pressure. It drops quickly in the cold, and properly maintained tire pressure helps prevent sliding.

  • Invest in a set of snow tires to safely power a car through slippery snow.

Do these three things and you’ll be able to safely steer your way through winter 2012, no matter how outrageous it gets out there.  And make sure to compare auto insurance quotes on HUB InsuranceHunter.ca and connect with one of our brokers to discuss your insurance needs.
