Understanding Tornado Risks in Canada🌪️

March 24th, 2025  |  Home Insurance

Did you know Canada experiences around 97 tornadoes per year? This makes it the second most tornado-prone country in the world, after the U.S., which sees an average of 1,200 tornadoes annually.

Canada’s "Tornado Alley" includes parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, all of which are extensions of the tornado-prone regions in the U.S.

Where & When Do Tornadoes Happen in Canada?

Tornadoes are most commonly observed in:

✅ The Prairies

✅ Southern Ontario

✅ Southern Quebec

Peak tornado season runs from April to September, with the highest activity during summer when severe thunderstorms are more frequent. However, tornadoes can occur outside of this period, as seen in 2024, Canada’s longest tornado season on record, lasting 240 days (9 months)!

In 2024:

  • Ontario recorded 50 tornadoes over land and 10 over water (waterspouts).
  • Quebec had 21 tornadoes, including four over water.

How Powerful Are Tornadoes?

Tornado wind speeds can reach up to 500 km/h, causing severe destruction, including:

✔️ Destroying buildings 🏠

✔️ Uprooting trees 🌳

✔️ Launching debris over large areas 🚗

Canada uses the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale to classify tornado intensity, ranging from EF-0 (weakest) to EF-5 (strongest).

Tornado Warning Signs & Safety Tips

Warning signs of a tornado:

✅ Severe thunderstorms with dark, greenish or yellowish clouds ☁️

✅ A funnel cloud forming at the base of a dark cloud 🌪️

🚨 Important: Never chase a tornado! They are unpredictable and may suddenly change direction.

Tornado Watch vs. Tornado Warning

🔹 Tornado Watch: Conditions are right for a tornado—stay alert and monitor weather updates.

🔹 Tornado Warning: A tornado has been spotted or is about to hit—take cover immediately!

✔️ If in a high-rise, seek shelter in an interior hallway.

✔️ Practice tornado drills with your family.

✔️ Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like:

  • Drinking water 🚰
  • Non-perishable food 🥫
  • Flashlights 🔦

✔️ Ensure exterior doors have three hinges and a 1-inch deadbolt lock.

✔️ Use impact-resistant roofing materials when upgrading your roof.

✔️ Secure outdoor furniture and barbecues before a storm.

✔️ Move vehicles to covered areas if possible.

✔️ Store loose items indoors to prevent them from becoming flying debris.
