Travel insurance tips for multi-person coverage

June 5th, 2018  |  Travel Insurance

You are gearing up for a family vacation, and the time has come to get your travel insurance. Opting to sign up for a family, or multi-personal travel insurance plan may be a good way to save time and money. Here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure you get the best out of your multi-person travel plan.

Ensure it is the cheaper option

When looking into a multi-person plan, it is best to ensure that it is the best option for you and your traveling companions.

If you are traveling with young kids, be sure to check that they are not already covered under your single-person plan. Some providers will extend coverage from a parent to a child that is under a specific age. There is no point in paying more for a policy for your child if they have coverage under yours.

Additionally, take the time to do the math. Depending on the type of policy needed, it may work out to be cheaper to opt for single policies for your family members.

Choose the coverage level for your needs

When deciding between all-inclusive and emergency medical, think critically about your trip and the level of coverage that you need.

If you and the family are flying off to Europe for 2 weeks, with checked baggage and important flights to catch, all-inclusive would be the way to go. This level of coverage would protect you in the event that something happens to your luggage, or if your flight is delayed or cancelled.

However, if you are taking the kids on a road trip just south of the boarder, chances are you will only need emergency-medical, as you would not have a flight to catch, or baggage to check.

Debate the merits of an annual plan

If you and your family travel often, then it may be worth the added cost to upgrade your multi-person single-trip plan to a multi-trip or annual travel insurance plan. This way, whether you all travel together, or some of you go off on your own, you will be covered for a full year. With an annual plan, you get one policy that grants you coverage for a full 365 days, saving you the hassle and cost of having to get a new policy for every trip.

Shop around

And finally, as always, the best practice is to shop around. Utilizing online quoters is the best way to find the cheapest travel insurance that meets your needs. One provider may offer a better price for multi-person coverage than another. And one may offer free coverage for your child when you get a policy for yourself.

To find the best coverage for you and your family, it is worth it to take the time to look at different options and find what works for you. Luckily online shopping for travel insurance is easy you’ll be able to gain access to a number of quotes with just few clicks of a button!
