Is travel insurance required for winter sports?

January 2nd, 2018  |  Travel Insurance

For some the ideal winter vacation is not escaping down south to a sunny beach, but strapping on their skis or snowboards and making their way down a snowy mountain. While you are aware that you should get travel for both of those types of vacations, you may be wondering if there are different coverage requirements for those engaging in winter sports instead of sipping pina coladas on a lounge chair. Let’s have a look at the coverage options.

Coverage options available

Whether you are going abroad or traveling to another province, or having a nice relaxing get away, or something more adventurous, it is highly recommended that you get some sort of travel insurance coverage. Depending on your needs there are different types of coverage options available to you for your choice of vacation.

If you are looking to engage in some sort of winter sport while out of your home province, there may be specific travel insurance available to you depending on the provider. This sort of coverage often comes in the form of an add-on to pair up with your base travel coverage, and provides extended coverage while you engage in various winter activates.

A general rule of thumb, whenever doing anything that holds some sort of added risk, it is best to spend the money and opt for the best coverage you are able to acquire, and any specific add-ons that may extend additional coverage. This will help to ensure that you will be properly covered in the event that something goes awry.

Risk factors and exclusions

Like with any sort of insurance policy, there may be some exclusions when it comes to your coverage. It is in your best interest to ensure you understand what your policy entails, and that your proposed travel activities will be covered. Some more extreme sports may be excluded from your coverage, so if you have any questions or need clarification regarding your policy, speak with your broker.

When you are applying for your travel insurance, it is important to be upfront with your broker about the type of vacation you are going on. Being honest about your travel plans will allow your broker to help you choose the correct policy for your needs, and help to ensure that you are properly covered while away. Being honest also help to ensure that you will be properly taken care of in the event that you need to make a claim. If you lie on your application, then hurt yourself doing something not covered by your policy, you will be stuck paying for the medical bill out of pocket.

Saving on your coverage

As always, your best course to ensuring you get the coverage you need while getting the best price possible is to shop around. Different providers may be able to cater to your needs better than others, so it is worthwhile to seek out various options.
