Transportation of the Future: The Amazing Hyperloop

June 9th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

Have you heard of the Hyperloop yet? Have you been keeping up with some of the concepts for transportation of the future? If you haven’t, you may be in for a surprise to see what the transportation industry and technology has in store for us in the coming years.

About the Hyperloop

While there has been talks of a high speed rail system here in Ontario, and there are already many high speed rail systems throughout the world, they pale in comparison to the concept of the Hyperloop. Even current high speed train systems that travel in excess of 300 km/h are no match for what is planned for the Hyperloop.

The Hyperloop is an ultra-high speed train system that developers estimate will travel at speeds of up to 1100 km/h. Yes you read that right - A train that can travel more than 1000 kilometers per hour. What is unique about these trains is that they will travel through pneumatic tubes that are air free and would propel the trains using magnetic force.

The “trains” in practice would be much smaller than the trains we know today and could accommodate about 30 people per capsule. However, they would be able depart approximately every 30 seconds. At these speeds, you would be able to travel from Toronto to Ottawa in less than 30 minutes – a trip that is about 450 kilometers and takes just over 4 hours to drive.

What do you think about the Hyperloop? Are you excited about the future of mass transportation?
