There is no doubt that North America has its fair share of great places to take a road trip. Whether you live in Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco, Dallas, or anywhere else, there are many great options and routes to consider for your road trip. 

Often times, the most difficult part of planning a road trip is determining where to go. There are just so many great options to consider. Narrowing your options can be a challenge, especially if you want to cover a lot of ground during your trip. If you are planning a road trip in North America in the future or are not sure which route to tackle first, the following list of great road trip ideas should give you some ideas for your trip:

  1.  Sea to Sky Highway

Known as highway 99 in British Columbia, this road trip will take you through a number of climate zones, through the mountains, and more. 


  2.  Route 66

Everyone has heard about it, but have you driven it? Spanning from California to Illinois, this trip is known for all the small towns that you will pass though. 


  3.  Loneliest Road in America

Spanning across more than 4000 kilometers from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts in the US, this road trip will take you through many states and terrains along the US-50 highway.


  4.  Banff, Alberta

If you are looking for a road trip with a view, this is the one for you. Driving through Banff and Jasper Park is one of the most scenic in Alberta. 


  5.  Las Vegas to Los Angeles

This 500 mile road trip is filled with no shortage of strange sites, abandoned ghost towns as well as Death Valley National Park. Also known as the Interstate 15.


  6.  Niagara Escarpment

If you are looking for a road trip in Ontario, taking a trip along to QEW to the Niagara Escarpment is a great option. There is lots of places to stop along the way and no shortage of things to see.


  7.  Napa Valley

Taking a road trip through the Napa Valley near San Francisco provides you with a scenic view along the pacific coast, gives you the chance to see the old growth forests in the region and you can make a stop at some of the world famous wineries in the region. 


 8.  The Cabot Trail

If you are on the east coast of Canada, The Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia is a beautiful 300 kilometer loop, making for a perfect road trip that you can complete in one day. 


  9.  The Lighthouse Tour of Maine

Another great east coast road trip, the Lighthouse Tour of Maine will take you down the coastline, with lots of places to stop and explore along the way.
