Tips for Avoiding the 4 Most Dangerous Driving Hazards during the Holidays

November 30th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

One thing people do not look forward to during the holiday season is the poor road conditions and the increased number of driving hazards. All it takes is one poor decision and you could find yourself in a precarious predicament.

Drive safe this holiday season by avoiding these common driving hazards:

Driving Hazard 1: Distracted Driving

We all know that distracted driving is an issue. It’s now the number one killer on our roads and drivers of all ages are guilty of distracted driving practices. The holiday season only increases the chances of you being distracted by your holiday plans, driving with the kids, pets and transporting your famous stuffing for dinner.

Advice:Turn off your phone before getting into the car to avoid being distracted. Buckle in kids and pets and secure any food you are transporting.

Driving Hazard 2: Impaired Driving

Impaired driving is an issue all year, but instances of drinking and driving peaks during the holidays. From family dinners, gatherings with friends, office parties, and New Year’s, there are many situations where you could enjoy a few drinks. You just need to do it responsibly.

Advice:If you are going to drink, plan ahead. Have a designated driver, call a taxi, use public transportation, or stay the night. The decision to plan ahead could be a life saver.

Driving Hazard 3: Drowsy Driving

Driving while tired is more dangerous than people realize. With a tendency for people to overbook their schedules during the holidays, a lack of sleep is common during this time of the year. However, it can negatively impact your ability to drive by slowing down your reaction times, impacting your decision making, and even cause you to dose off behind the wheel.

Advice:Get plenty of rest before you hit the road, especially if you are driving a long distance. If possible, take a nap before driving, share the driving duties, take frequent breaks, and if need be, stay over at a friend’s home or a hotel.

Driving Hazard 4: Failure to Adjust Driving Based on the Weather

Adding to our list of things to worry about during the holidays is road conditions. From snow falls to black ice and freezing rain, road conditions can change in an instant. Drivers need to slow down, be extra cautious, and adjust their driving to make our roads safe for everyone.

Advice:Get your winter tires on now and give yourself some extra time to get to your destination. Don’t rush, and if the road conditions are severe, consider staying off the road until conditions improve.
