A Thanksgiving Road Safety Reminder for Ontario Drivers
With holidays like Thanksgiving and events like Oktoberfest on the way, now is the perfect time to quickly review safety on the roads. For most people, long weekends and holidays are like a whirlwind. With so much going on, so many things to do and so many people to see, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and overlook important things that we would otherwise not take for granted, especially when it comes to road safety.
Think before you drink
This should go without saying, but always think before you decide to drink this thanksgiving. If you know you are going to have a few drinks with family and friends make alternative arrangement:
- Assign a designated driver
- Use a designated driver service
- Take public transportation
- Decide to stay the night
Remember, the police will be out in full force and you should expect RIDE programs. Don’t get caught driving and driving. It’s not worth the risk or repercussions.
Don’t be a turkey when behind the wheel
While it’s important all the time, it is even more important to pay attention to what you are doing during a holiday long weekend. With more people out on the roads, you cannot afford to allow distractions to influence your driving. Put your phone away and keep your eyes focused on the road ahead. Avoid these distracted driving habits
Clear your mind before you drive
Cognitive distractions are just as dangerous as any other form of distracted driving. With so much going on, it’s easy to allow your mind to wander and think about the day that was at the office, what you need to pick up at the store, and naturally, thinking about how great your turkey will taste when you have thanksgiving dinner. Try to clear your mind and focus on driving.
Have your head on a swivel in parking lots
Parking lots are perhaps one of the busiest places during thanksgiving, especially at the grocery store, making it imperative that you pay attention to your surroundings. From other cars to people, cyclists, curbs, posts, and shopping carts, there is no shortage of things you could collide with if you are not paying attention.
What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year? Driving to see family? Is a road trip in the cards?
