Steps to Take if your Home Catches Fire

September 22nd, 2011  |  Insurance

No one wants to experience a house fire, but unfortunately it does happen and you need to know what to do next. Once you ensure that everyone in your home is okay and the fire is under control by firefighters, you need to contact your insurance company immediately.

Filing your claim right away is very important. Talk to your insurance broker about the next steps that you need to complete and do so as quickly as possible. One of the first things that your insurance company will ask as part of the claims process is to submit an itemized list of items you lost in the fire as well as an estimate of the damage that was caused to your home.

You also need to review your home insurance policy to understand exactly what you are covered for in terms of fire damage and what will be provided by your insurer.

Once the initial claim is made, make sure that you keep track of your expenses, especially the expenses that will be reimbursed by your insurer. Keep track of everything.

You will then need to figure out how you want to repair your home by going out and getting a number of estimates for repairs. How you approach getting back to life as usual after a home insurance claim because of fire will depend on if your policy is actual cash value or replacement value in nature.
