Steps to Discontinue an Auto Insurance Policy

September 19th, 2011  |  Insurance

If you decide to sell your car and are not planning on getting another vehicle, then you need to discontinue your auto insurance policy. While this is an obvious step that people know they need to do, many people are not sure that they are supposed to do to cancel their policy.

The first thing that you need to do is call your insurance company. You need to let them know that you want to discontinue your coverage because you will no longer have a car. When you call, make sure that you know the exact date when you want to discontinue the coverage – they will ask for this information.

If you are cancelling your policy at the end of your current policy, you can simply let it expire and not renew. But, if you want to cancel in the middle of your current policy, you may be required to pay a cancellation fee. This fee and the specific steps will vary from insurer to insurer, so make sure you ask them about the cancellation fees.

It is important to get everything in writing and have both sides sign off on the cancellation. This will ensure that everything is done correctly and there are no issues going forward.
