Snow Shoveling 101: How Not to Kill Yourself

December 21st, 2014  |  Home Insurance

There are generally two camps when it comes to shoveling – those who don’t mind doing it, and those who despise the thought of having to go outside in the cold and shovel.

Whether you like it or not, it’s something you have to do if you live in Canada, and it’s important that you know how to shovel correctly without killing yourself.

There are thousands of people who injure themselves each year, simply because they are not taking the proper precautions or using the correct shoveling techniques.

  • Push, don’t lift: One of the biggest mistakes people make when shoveling is lifting the snow, when you should actually be pushing it. Pushing the snow places less stress on your back, arms and your heart. Push it across the driveway. When you do lift it, don’t try to hulk it onto the pile. Lift small amounts that you can easily handle.
  • Treat it like exercise: Just like when exercising at the gym, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. When you shovel using the correct techniques, you reduce the odds of getting injured. Avoid trying to lift too much snow at once.
  • Take breaks:You don’t have to finish all the shoveling at once. Take frequent breaks, and if it’s really cold outside, go inside to warm up as necessary.
  • Breathe! Don’t forget to breathe when shoveling. Proper breathing when shoveling, as with any exercise, will ensure you don’t tire out quickly and have the energy to finish shoveling.
  • Dress warmly:Don’t forget to dress warmly. Wear gloves and a hat, especially when it’s extremely cold outside.

For those who are older or just are not interested in getting outside and shoveling, here are two more simple options (but they will cost you a few bucks!):

  • Invest in a snow blower:Take the stress off your back and consider investing in a snow blower. They are a worthwhile investment, especially if you live in an area where you get a lot of snow. You will be happy you bought one once you start using it.
  • Pay the neighbor: Every neighborhood has that kid who offers to shovel your driveway when it snows. If you don’t feel like shoveling, why not pay them to do the job for you?
