Seat Belt Safety is No Joke

March 27th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

According to Transport Canada:

Today 93% of Canadians use their seat belts. Each percentage increase in the national seat belt wearing rate has helped to reduce the number of motor vehicle fatalities.

The 7% of Canadians not wearing seat belts account for almost 40% of fatalities in vehicle collisions.

Seat belts save about 1,000 lives a year in Canada.

These numbers are pretty telling as to the how important of a role seat belts play in keeping you safe when you are in a vehicle. They prevent injury and will save your life.

Seat belt Fines in Ontario

Failure to wear a seat belt and use it properly will results in fines and demerit points if you are caught. In Ontario, the fine for seat belt infractions is between $200 and $1000. If you are convicted of a seat belt offence you will also receive 2 demerit points – not something that you want on your driving record.

Your Responsibility as a Driver

As a driver, it is your responsibility to make sure that you are wearing your seat belt properly and you must enforce the use of a seat belt for any passenger that is under 16. It is your duty to make sure that all passengers in the vehicle are wearing seat belts.

Tips for Proper Seat Belt Use

  • Buckle the seat belt and make sure you hear the click
  • Adjust the lap belt so it fits firmly
  • Make sure your shoulder belt fits snuggly across your chest
  • Refrain from wearing your seat belt under your arm
  • One person per seat belt
  • If your seat belt is not working correctly, have it fixed immediately

Wearing a seat belt is the best way to help reduce injuries when in a car accident. Be safe and buckle up every time you drive.
