School Zone Safety Reminder for Drivers this March Break
With March break on the horizon, it is a good time to remind drivers that children will be out and about during the March break week throughout the day. Therefore, drivers need to be extra careful when driving through school zones during hours when children are usually in class.
During March break, it is not uncommon for kids to not only play outside near their homes and in residential areas; they also spend time at the school yard and local parks playing with their friends. It is also important to be extra cautious around places such as the mall, movie theatres, local arenas, and tourist attractions – all places where children and families go during the March break.
Here is a refresher on some tips that all drivers need to review:
- Slow down in school zones: Even though the kids are not in school does not mean they will not be in the area. Slow down and drive at the posted speed limit.
- Pay extra attention at crosswalks and street lights: With school out and crossing guards not present, pay extra attention to your surroundings when you approach crosswalks and street lights.
- Watch out near parked cars: You never know when a child could walk out from behind a parked car or even a telephone poll or street sign.
- Keep your eyes on the road: Minimize distractions while driving in school zones and areas where children are likely to be present. It only takes being distracted for a second for something to happen.
