Road Safety Tips for Highway Driving

August 6th, 2012  |  Insurance

Road safety is of the utmost importance to drivers in Ontario and across Canada. No matter where you are driving it is important to practice safe driving techniques. And, road safety is especially important when driving on Canadian highways. Since you are driving at a higher rate of speed, the impact of a mistake behind the wheel can be more significant.

Here are some tips to take into consideration when driving on the highway:

  1. Take a break if you are tired: Driving on the highway can be tiring, especially if you are driving long distances. If you are feeling tired, stop and take a break. This will help you be more alert and aware of your surroundings.

  2. Know how to share the road with trucks: The highway is full of trucks. When driving near trucks, make sure that you stay out of their blind spot, maintain a safe distance, and never make a move that will force the truck to make a kneejerk reaction.

  3. Check your blind spots: Always check your blind spots, shoulder check, and use your blinker when changing lanes on the highway.

  4. Know the rules of the road: Make sure that you know things like the speed limit, passing rules, and other laws when driving on local or foreign highways. Rules may vary slightly depending on where you are driving.

  5. Move over:If you are going slower than other vehicles on the highway be sure to move over into the right lane to allow for faster traffic to pass. This way you will not impede traffic.

Keep these road safety tips in mind when driving on the highway and you will be well on your way to enjoying a safe drive.
