Is Renter’s Insurance important?

September 22nd, 2011  |  Insurance

Many people have a misconception about renters insurance. Many believe that if they rent, they do not need any form of home insurance because their landlord’s insurance policy will handle a claim. But, if there was a fire or a flood in your rental unit, your landlords insurance only covers the building, not your belongings. So, you need to have renters insurance if you want to protect your personal belongings if something were to occur.

Others also believe that it is not worth getting, however, the truth is that it is something that all renters should have, no matter where they live. Just the peace of mind in knowing that you are covered should be enough for renters to get a policy. And, considering that most home insurance renter’s policies are more than affordable, there really isn’t a reason not to have it.

Depending on where you live, having renters insurance might also be required as part of your rental application. Many condos and apartments now require residents to have a policy before they are accepted.

Renters insurance is also important if you own high priced items and collectibles. If you have invested in high quality goods then you need to protect them. This is just common sense.
