New Canadians - What can new immigrants do to keep their insurance rates low

September 27th, 2012  |  Auto Insurance

There is no shortage of things that people need to do when they decide to move to a new country. From finding a home, transitioning to a new job, and getting acclimated to their new surrounds, there is more than enough to keep them busy.

One thing that often gets overlooked is car insurance. While many people make the assumption that their previous record of good driving and a valid license is enough, immigrant drivers are often shocked when they get an auto insurance quote that is much higher than expected. While some, not knowing any better, accept these higher rates, others realize that there may be some things that they can do to get better auto insurance rates as an immigrant driver.

Here are some of the things that immigrant drivers need to do to keep their insurance rates low:

  • Purchase an insurance friendly car: This is always a good idea, no matter what your situation is.

  • Get a driving record from your previous insurers: Always have proof of your driving record from your country of origin when you move to Canada.

  • Have proof of previous insurance: Naturally, insurance companies in Ontario are going to want to see proof that you were an insurance driver in your native country before moving. Have proof of previous insurance coverage.

  • Research before you move: Don’t wait until you get to Canada before figuring out what documentation you need. Get things in order before you move.

  • Shop around: Don’t settle for the quote you get from the first insurance company you visit. Shop around and get a number of quotes.

  • Work with a broker: Brokers are effect rive in the sense that they will help you with your search and will provide you with a series of quotes to consider.
