It’s Packing Season – Advice, Suggestions, and a Great Tip for Doing A Home Inventory List

March 9th, 2014  |  Insurance

It’s the perfect time to talk about packing! With the real estate market set to kick into high gear, students across the country finishing up the school year, and with the change into the spring season, there are many Canadians that will be moving in the not too distant future. And since you are sorting through all your belongings, it is also a great time to take a home inventory.

4 Packing Tips for a Successful Moving Day

Moving can be a stressful experience. To avoid the dread of all the packing and unpacking that comes with moving day, here are a few packing tips to make it easier:

  1. Packing should be a marathon, not a sprint: The worst thing you can do when it comes to packing is to leave it until the last minute. Packing procrastination could result in things getting broken or forgotten as you rush to complete tasks before moving day. Space out packing over time – it will make things less stressful and more manageable.
  2. Don’t pay for boxes – Go to the store: Did you know that you can get boxes for free? All you have to do is give your local store a call and most will happily put some boxes aside for you. Also, if you know you are moving, grab an extra box or two each time you go to the grocery store. You will have enough boxes in no time!
  3. Want to prevent scratches? Wrap your furniture: To avoid scratches, dents, and dings in your furniture, it is important that you wrap your furniture. One thing that works really well and is cost effective is flooring underlay foam. You can get it at any home or hardware store in your area and it does a great job protecting your valued belongings.
  4. Invest in good quality moving supplies: Don’t cheap out on moving supplies. Make sure you have good quality tape to hold your boxes together, have moving blankets to protect your belonging in the moving truck, and markers that make boxes easy to read.

Moving is the perfect time to do a home inventory

Now, let’s talk about home inventory and your home insurance. Whether you have a home inventory list, know that you need to create one, or have been putting it off for a rainy day, the packing process is the perfect time to create, review, and make sure your home inventory is up to date.

You can quickly and easily create a list of your belongings as you pack. Divide the list by rooms and each time you pack a box, record the items on your list. Also, make sure that you include larger and high ticket items such as your TV or sofa. If you are reducing clutter and getting rid of items, make sure that you remove these items from your list. Once you finish packing, you will also have an up to date home inventory – how great is that?

Do you have a home inventory list? Have you ever thought about writing one? Try it out the next time you need to do some packing or spring cleaning.
