If you are in the market for a vacation home or are thinking about the possibility of one in the future, you need to do your homework when it comes to insurance for the property. It may not be as cut and dry as you think and there are a number of other variables that you need to think about. In this sense, it is different from your current home insurance policy and you should understand how insurance works for holiday homes and properties before you invest in one.

The truth is that your insurance company may not deal with policies in this area, so it is a good idea to call your insurer and discuss your options with them before moving forward. The last thing you want to do is assume your insurance for the property is a formality.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Insurance coverage for your vacation home is classified different than your home insurance and the policy will vary to some degree.
  • Most insurers will cover your for your vacation home if you already have a home insurance policy with them – But, there may be certain properties they will not insure
  • How you use the property and how much time you personally spend there will impact the type of coverage you need.

There is a lot to factor in when it comes to vacation property insurance so it is a good idea to talk with your current insurance company about your options.

Do you own a vacation property? What insurance advice can you offer others who are considering purchasing a holiday home?
