Insurance Tips for Homeowners

September 3rd, 2011  |  Home Insurance

Insurance for your home should be a top priority for homeowners. Protecting your home and the contents of your home cannot be overlooked. The last thing you want to happen is having to make a claim only to find out that you either don’t have the coverage you thought you did, or you have to fill out additional papers because you were ill prepared.

The following are some important insurance tips that all homeowners need to review.

  • Tell the truth: Hiding things from your insurance company is not recommended. You could void your coverage if you are not upfront with your insurer.

  • Know your policy: Make sure you know the type of coverage you have and what you are covered for.

  • Make a list and check it twice: Record all your belongings and keep a detail record of high ticket items.

  • Take photos: Make sure you take photos. You can also record your homes content on video as well.

  • Install a security system: An effective security system will not only deter theft, it will also save you some money on your home insurance.

  • Store documents offsite: Have multiple copies of your insurance documents and keep one copy outside of your home. This will ensure that you have a detailed record of belongings just in case your original list is lost in your home.

  • Review your policy regularly: Review your policy on a regular basis. And, make sure to update your list of insured items.
