The recent changes to the law in Ontario regarding carbon monoxide detectors has caused many of us to take a look at our current alarms, and if you don’t have one, it’s time to put a carbon monoxide detector on your shopping list. Failure to buy one will not only make you subject to a fine, you are also putting your family at risk.

How to Buy a Carbon Monoxide Detector

As with anything else that you buy, there are certain things that you should be looking for when buying a carbon monoxide detector. Here is what to look for:

  • Smoke alarm/carbon monoxide combo: Why not kill two birds with one stone and invest in a device that offers both alarms? There are many great options on the market today, making it easy to find one that is ideal for your home.
  • Audio alarm: Make sure your alarm meets audio requirements. It’s recommended the alarm is at least 85-decibels and can be heard at a distance of 10 feet or more.
  • Warranty: Carbon monoxide alarms can malfunction and this is why it’s important to purchase a device that comes with a good product warranty.
  • Ease of use: How much use can a carbon monoxide detector be if it’s difficult to use and you are not sure if it’s installed correctly. Look for devices that are easy to install and the instructions are clear and simple to follow.
  • Reputation: Even if you have to spend a few extra dollars, it is more than worth buying a detector that has great reviews and positive customer reviews. Don’t buy based on price alone.

Keep in mind that you will require a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. So, if you have three levels, you will need three devices to ensure your home is properly protected.

Using Technology to Improve Home Security

While standard CO alarms are effective to help protect you and your family, new technologies are helping home protection evolve. Products like Nest Protect are adding a new dimension to CO alarms, helping families to better react when an alarm sounds.

Standard devices sound an alarm when they detect smoke or carbon monoxide. However, the one issue with this is that when you hear the beeping alarm, you often do not know what the alarm is for and where this issue is in your home.

Nest Protect changes this. It is more than just an alarm; it’s a source of information. It uses voice commands to tell you what the problem is and where it is in your home. This allows your family to react in a safe way, helping you to avoid the area in question.

Plus, if you are not home, it will send a notification directly to your phone or tablet. You can also use the Nest app to check in on things at any time. The app also has many other features that can provide you with vital information in case you have an emergency in your home.

What type of carbon monoxide detector do you have installed in your home? Would you consider using a newer device such as Nest Protect?
