September 21st, 2015  |  Auto Insurance

You're 16 years old, you're ready for the responsibility and you want to get your driver’s licence. It's a rite of passage for teens everywhere and you're ready to take the challenge - or at least you think you are. Alberta has a two-stage graduated licensing system that everyone must go through before they become a fully licensed driver.

Here are the five steps you need to take to get behind the wheel in Alberta:

Get Your Class 7 Learner’s Permit

In order to qualify for the learner’s permit, you have to be at least 14 years of age. Presuming you meet that requirement, getting the Class 7 license means passing the written knowledge exam and an eye exam.

The written exam is designed to test your knowledge on road safety and traffic regulations. You can pick up a copy of the Class 7 test booklet at a registry office or download it online.  You can even take practice tests online to get ready for the real exam ahead of time.

You’ll also need to be ready for a vision test so wear your glasses or contact lenses if you need them. The registry wants to make sure you can see before you start driving!

Take Some Driving Lessons

Once you score your Class 7 license, it’s time to get started on the driving part of your driver’s license. It’s best to start out by getting all the good habits and safety instruction from a proper driving instructor.

The Alberta Motor Association offers a combination of in-class and in-car driver training that you can enrol in to help you get a handle on your driving. You’ll learn how to deal with weather, traffic and how to respond in emergency situations.

Even better, you’ll be able to get a discount on your auto insurance. Several insurance companies shave a few hundred dollars off the annual cost of your car insurance if you've taken Driver's Education courses.

Class 5 - GDL is Your Next Step

You can go for this license once you’ve had your Class 7 license for a year - two years if you were fourteen when you got your permit. You will need to take another road test and be at least sixteen years of age.

The Class 5 - GDL license allows you to do more driving without all the restrictions of your Class 7. Drivers no longer need a licensed adult in the car and can drive at any hour of the day or night. They still have to maintain a blood alcohol level of 0% and ensure there are enough seatbelts for passengers. You can apply for your full Class 5 after two years as long as you maintain a clean driving record.

Practice, Practice, Practice

You have two years to drive around with the Class 5 - GDL before you apply for the Full Class 5 so the key is to practice everything you learned and pay attention to the law. Be careful and obey street signs.  Drive slowly through school and construction zones, pay attention to other cars around you and give yourself lots of room when you’re changing lanes or making left turns.

Get that Full Class 5 and Enjoy

Well, you’re finally here. Congratulations! Once pass the final road test and apply for your Full Class 5 license you are free take on the open road, armed with your license, your discounted insurance and your car. Have fun and be safe!
