How to get your car ready for spring driving
The snow is melting, the days are getting longer, and the sun is starting to shine. That means it's springtime. March 20th was the first official day of spring, and it's time to get your car ready for the warm weather.
As the seasons change and spring cleaning fever takes over, drivers need to get your cars ready for spring. It takes a little bit of work and a little bit of money, but it's worth it to make sure your car is safe and sound for the next few months - including the road trips to the beach or cottage you may be planning.
Make a maintenance appointment
Let's face it: winter can be harsh on your car. The ice, slush, and salt can harm both the exterior as well as all the inner working parts of your car. After the snow melts, get your car ready for spring by taking it for a routine maintenance appointment.
Ask your trusted mechanic to check the brakes, change the oil, and check the engine. You may also want to change the wiper blades and double check the alignment. Making sure your car is in good working order will keep you and your loved ones safe and sound.
Take off your winter tires
According to Car Proof, now is the time to take off your winter tires and put back on your regular summer tires. Although there isn't an official date when the winter tires need to be removed from your car, it's not a good idea to leave them on too long after the weather starts to get warmer.
"Don't forget the pressure. Many Canadians live in a climate that make winter tires a safety necessity when the temperature drops. Once the mercury climbs above 7°C (and starts to stay there!) it’s time to switch back to your all-season or performance tires," suggests Car Proof.
Give it a good cleaning
The winter includes some of the dirtiest months of the year. All the slush and salt that gets stuck on your boots gets dragged into your car. Taking your car to the car wash and getting a good all round cleaning - both inside and out - will have your car looking like new. You can remove any stains and get the exterior shining with detailing and a coat of wax.
Check in on your auto insurance policy
Even though your car may be the same your insurance needs can change. Spring is the perfect time to review your auto insurance policy and see if you need to make changes. Having too much insurance is just as bad as not having enough. Both end up costing you big bucks.
Paying for too much insurance is a waste of money, and not having enough could have you paying out of pocket. If you have an accident, theft, or damage to your car and don't have full coverage, the repairs could end up costing more than you can easily afford. That's why it's important to review your insurance policy to ensure you have the coverage you need while you are getting your car ready for spring driving.
