How to Choose High Quality Luggage for Travelling

November 11th, 2014  |  Travel Insurance

We have all been there before. Waiting at the luggage carousel in the airport for our bags. As we wait, for what seems to feel like forever, we are pleasantly surprised to see suitcase after suitcase begin to surface.

But, we all know there is no guaranteed our suitcase will look the same as it did when we check it with the airline. You never know what could happen to your luggage from point A to point B. We can only pray our luggage makes it to our destination in one piece.

Then it happens. We get that sense of panic when we see a suitcase that looks similar to your own, cracked wide open, with personal items sprawled all over the luggage carousel. Then there is that sense of relief when you recognize it’s not your bag.

This situation serves as a great reminder that perhaps it’s time to invest in some high quality luggage for your next trip. Cheap and low quality luggage will only last so many trips, and you don’t want to risk losing important personal items because your suitcase malfunctioned.

3 Tips for Choosing The Right Luggage

While it seems simple enough, choosing the right luggage for travelling is not as simple as it seems. There are literally hundreds of options to choose from. Luggage comes in all shapes, sizes, color, in addition to the many different special features you can choose from.

Selecting the right suitcase depends on multiple factors, particularly how often you travel, and the items you frequently travel with on your trips.

Here are some key considerations for choosing the right luggage:

  • Build Quality: Investing in a high quality bag will help you get the most use out of it. Look for bags that are made from highly durable materials and are designed to take a beating.
  • Mobility: A full sized suitcase that is filled to capacity is heavy. Therefore, it’s important that you invest in luggage that takes portability in mind. Remember, certain materials are heavier than others, something that can impact how much you can actually pack into your suitcase without exceeding load limits.
  • Capacity: Being able to fit all your items into one suitcase is important. No one wants to travel with multiple bags, especially considering you will have to pay a fee for each piece of luggage you check with most airlines. Look for suitcases that have the volume you need. Some suitcases appear large, but because of their design, actually do not give you as much space as you need.

While there is no guarantee, you often get what you pay for when purchasing luggage. Focus on finding luggage that meets your travel needs, is durable, and fits within your budget. Before buying any piece of luggage, take some time to read reviews from previous customers. This will provide you with a realistic idea of the actually quality and durable of the luggage.

Do you have any luggage horror stories? On average, how many years do you get out of a suitcase? Do you have a criteria for choosing a suitcase?
