Heat Waves and its Impact on Children
While everyone enjoys the summer heat, a summer heat wave is something completely different. Heat waves occur when the temperature remains consistent have average for a person of time. In Ontario, a heat wave is often followed up by an extreme heat alert that is passed along byEnvironment Canada.
When this occurs, everyone should take extra precautions to ensure they are protected from the sun during peak hours and are properly hydrated throughout the day. This is particularly important for at risk groups such as children, who will experience the effects of a heat wave much quicker.

They seem more irritated than normal
They have the appearance of being sick or not feeling well
Reduced energy
Headaches and dizziness

How to keep cool during a heat wave
Keeping cool and hydrated is vital when it is extremely hot outside, especially for children. Here are some tips to help ensure that your children stay save when it is hot outside:
Keep children in air conditioned areas as much as possible, especially during peak hours
Never leave your child in a car during a heat wave. Cars head up very quickly and children will feel the effects of heat stress much faster than adults
Turn on the AC when driving in the car; if it is too hot opening a window will not do much to cool your child down
Always travel with water so your children remain hydrated at all times
If possible, travel outside of peak hours. Even with the AC on, your car can become very hot and may not be ideal conditions for your children.
Dress your children in light clothing so they remain cool
Try and avoid going outside and performing strenuous activities during peak hours
Always apply sun screen to any areas of your child’s skin that is exposed to the sun
