Fraud Prevention Month – How to Avoid Becoming a Victim

March 4th, 2013  |  Insurance

March is Fraud Prevention Month across Canada, and it is a good time to shed some light on this issue. Unfortunately, fraud is a widespread issue that exists in many different aspects of our lives. The truth is that thousands of people across Canada are victims of fraud, and some without even knowing it.

There is no ideal target for fraud. So, any person at any age, location, or orientation could be a target. There is a misconception that fraudsters only target the weak – but the truth is they target everyone. Fraudsters are very creative and meticulous with their actions. They are well organized and once they have you convinced, they will attempt to scam you again.

Examples of fraud include:

  • Identify theft
  • Car Insurance fraud
  • Health insurance claim fraud
  • Internet and email scams
  • Charity scams
  • Employment scams

Tips to protect yourself

There are a number of things that you can do to become aware and protect yourself against potential fraud scams:

  • Keep yourself up to date about the latest scams that are being reported
  • Understand that fraud could happen to you
  • Keep your personal information private, safe, and secure
  • Keep passwords and PIN codes private – don’t share them with others
  • Question anything that does not seem right – if you get a bad feeling then back away
  • If you suspect that you could be a victim of fraud, call the police immediately – it is better to be safe than sorry

What do you do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud? What tips can you offer to others?
