Firework Safety
As the first long weekend of the summer approaches, many people in Ontario are beginning to plan their list of things they are going to do to relax and enjoy the nice weather. One of the most common things that people do to celebrate the long weekend is to attend a fireworks display. Seeing fireworks is a fun and exciting thing that the whole family can enjoy.
However, before you go out a buy some fireworks or pack up the car to go see a public display, make sure that you and your family understand proper fireworks safety.
Safety tips for home fireworks displays
If you are going to have a fireworks display at home or with your neighbors, here are some important tips to keep in mind to ensure that your display is safe and goes off without a hitch:
- Only purchase legal fireworks – illegal fireworks are not regulated and are at a higher risk of being faulty.
- Never let children set off fireworks
- If a firework is a dud, it is best to discard it rather than trying to re light it
- Properly read the instructions before setting off anything
- Never set off fireworks in your hand
- Always have a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case a firework misfires
- Set off fireworks on an open area that is clear from trees, bushes and homes.
- Reconsider setting off fireworks if the weather conditions are not favorable.
Public fireworks displays
Going to see fireworks at your local community centre or a location in your city is a great way to have fun. However, even though there is a very small chance of things going wrong, here are some tips to ensure you can enjoy the fireworks display safely:
- Always pay attention when the fireworks display is going on. You never know when one will misfire.
- Always keep a safe distance. If you are too close, you could run the risk of getting showered with sparks.
- Never cross the security line for the fireworks display. It is set up for a reason.
- Keep these safety tips in mind while enjoying fireworks during the holiday weekends this summer.
