Is Condo Insurance Different from Home Insurance?

October 7th, 2013  |  Insurance

Becoming a homeowner is a milestone moment in people’s lives. But, if you want to be prepared to be a homeowner, you need to understand some of the common things about home ownership.

Part of owning a home is safeguarding your property and belongings with home insurance. What about if you live in a condo? Is your home insurance policy needs different than if you buy a how? Many people are surprised to find out that condo insurance does in fact differ from a traditional home insurance policy in a number of important ways.

How condo insurance differs from traditional home insurance

Here are the main differences and similarities between condo insurance and home insurance:

  1. Home insurance covers the structure of your home and its belongings.
  2. Condo insurance only covers the structures that belong to you, such as interior walls and the belongings within your home.
  3. Condo insurance does not cover common areas such as the condo pool or gym.
  4. Condo insurance, just like with home insurance policies cover you against damage or loss as a result of fire, theft, water, smoke and certain types of weather damage.
  5. You are required by law to have home insurance. The same applies to condo insurance policies.
  6. Condo insurance may also offer a number of forms of optional coverage such as personal liability and loss of use.

These are the main differences between traditional and condo insurance. If you are not sure about your coverage or policy elements, make sure that you talk to your insurance company for clarification.
