Best of the Best of Auto Technology from CES 2015

January 12th, 2015  |  Insurance

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is one of the most anticipated events of the year for tech lovers. It is considered by many to be the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies and has displayed the best up and coming consumer technologies for more than 40 years.

Held in Las Vegas, CES 2015 “showcases more than 3,600 exhibitors, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more; a conference program with 250 sessions; and 150,000 to 160,000 attendees from more than 140 countries.”

Some of the most popular and innovative consumer products have been introduced at CES over the years, and there is no doubt that this year will live up to the hype, especially in the auto technology area.

While auto technology is always a focal point of the event, a record 10 auto makers appeared this year. They are demonstrating new technology enabling cars to park without a driver in the car, autonomous road navigation, collision avoidance, and even cars that connect through smartphones and lasers.

Here are some of the most notable auto technologies present at this year’s show:

Volkswagen’s Golf R Touch

Forget about touch screens. This new concept by Volkswagen can recognize a number of specific hand signals using a camera. Rather than having to look at the touchscreen to perform a command, it helps drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

Audi’s ‘Piloted Driving’ A7

Audi is taking driverless cars to the next level. How do you make a big splash at one of the biggest shows of the year? Audi’s ‘Piloted Driving’ A7 concept arrived at CES after a 560-mile trek from Silicon Valley – and the car did most of the driving by itself.

Android Auto or Apple CarPlay Integration

Android Auto or Apple CarPlay integration is finally here. No longer do you have to worry about upgrading your car stereo. A number of stereo manufacturers have come to CES with aftermarket stereo units that can integrate Android and Apple devices. Each one comes with a 7-inch screen and has the ability to operate without a phone connected.

KeyFree

Keyfree Technologies, a Toronto-based company, introduced a smartphone app that they claim will soon make car keys obsolete. It involves installing a small device in your car, downloading an app on your smartphone, and you can even control the time of the day your car can be used - something that can be used to monitor your teen’s driving. Plus, it also logs the vehicle activity.

There are definitely some very interesting auto technology concepts at this year’s show, many of which are building on current functionality. Are you impressed with these new innovations? Tell us about which ideas you could actually see becoming a regular feature in vehicles? Which ones would you personally use?
