May 24th, 2012  |  Insurance

If you are looking to add a new element to your backyard this summer, why not do what many homeowners across Ontario are doing; building a backyard fire pit. Backyard fire pits allow you to duplicate the camping experience at home. And, it is a great way to enjoy summer nights.

Fire pits are great for entertaining

Fire pits are great for:

  • Entertaining guests

  • Barbecuing over an open fire

  • Having a campout with the kids

  • Enjoying a romantic evening with your partner

  • Spending a quite summer night outside

What you need to know

While fire pits are a great source of entertainment, there are a few things that you need to find out as a homeowner before you install one:

  • Since the bylaws in each city are different, fire pits may or may not be legal in your area. It is best to check with your municipality before building one in your yard. Even if they are legal, there may be some parameters that must be met (for example, they may need to be a certain distance from your home, etc.)

  • Contact your insurance provider to see if installing a fire pit will have any impact on your policy. Failure to inform your home insurance company may lead to them not being liable for damage if it occurs as a result of your fire pit.

What to consider when installing a fire pit

Here are some things to consider when adding a fire pit to your back yard:

  • What size of a fire pit do you want to build?

  • Where in your yard is an ideal place for the pit? Is your yard is good place for one?

  • Are you going to build a fire pit or purchase a ready-made one?

  • Do you want a stationary or portable fire pit?

  • Are there any trees or bushes in your yard that could pose an issue?

  • Do you plan on installing a screen over the open flame?

  • What rules are you going to implement in regards to who can use the fire pit and when it can be used?

  • What fire safety precautions are you going to take to ensure everyone is protected?
