Are travel insurance claims paid upfront or reimbursed?

May 9th, 2018  |  Travel Insurance

Having travel insurance can give you peace of mind knowing that you are covered if something happens while you are on vacation. You hope that you’ll never need it, but in the case that you do, how does it work? Do you have to pay upfront for medical or related travel bills and get reimbursed by your insurer or are they paid for by your insurance directly? Let’s take a look.

Do you have to pay upfront or is your insurer billed directly?

Unfortunately, there is no clear black and white answer regarding this question. There are instances that fall into both categories of when you would have to pay upfront and when your insurer will pick up the tab.

If you find yourself needing serious medical attention, your insurer will be the one to cover the costs directly. This allows you to focus on getting yourself better without having to stress about the costs. If you need less-costly, non-emergency medical attention, chances are you will have to pay upfront, and then put through a claim to be reimbursed for the costs.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled, or the airline loses your baggage, permitting that you have coverage for such things, you would be reimbursed for any costs associated with needing a new flight or replaying belongings.

How do you put forth a claim?

In the event that you do need to put forth a claim, it is important that you understand how the claim process works. Thankfully your insurance broker is there to help you properly put forth the claim and make the process as stress free as possible. Depending on your insurer you may have a number of avenues as to how you can file your claim. Many now offer the option to file via online, mobile apps, but still have the option of snail mail.

When going into the claim process, it is best to contact your broker and get the ball rolling as soon as possible. Also, be sure to keep as much documentation as possible, it is better to error on the side of caution and have too much than too little!

Ensuring you have sufficient coverage

In order to put forth a claim for anything that happens while you are outside of your home province, be it medical or flight and baggage related, you need to make sure you have proper coverage. Unfortunately, nothing can be done for you if you do not get insurance before you leave, so it is imperative to ensure that you get at least emergency medical coverage before you leave on your trip. This will guarantee that you will have coverage for any medical expenses if something were to happen. And if you go one step further and opt to get flight and baggage insurance you will be able to travel knowing that all your bases are covered.

To find the best coverage for your needs, it is advised that you shop around online for your travel insurance. Looking for travel insurance in this way will help you save time and ensure that you find coverage that meets your needs, and at the best price.
