Apple May Be the Next Tech Giant to Develop a Self-driving Car
With Google well on its way to creating a self-driving car, and with developments from other major car makers, you knew it would only be a matter of time before other technology giants got involved.
Enter Apple.
According to multiple sources, Apple has begun to explore its options for the development of self-driving cars. While it is only currently studying the process of how to make an electric self-driving car, there may be more to this.
“Apple is gathering advice on parts and production methods, focusing on electric and connected-car technologies, while studying the potential for automated driving,” says Edward Taylor and Alexei Oreskovic, in Apple studies self-driving car, auto industry source says.
“But clearly Apple has sharply raised its ambitions in automotive technology. Car technology has become a prime area of interest for Silicon Valley companies ranging from Google Inc., which has built a prototype self-driving car, to electric car-maker Tesla Motors Inc.,” they add.
While Apple has declined to comment on the speculation, other news sources are keeping a close eye on Apple, potentially looking for signs of a new direction for the company. Entering the auto market would surely have an impact on the production of other Apple products, and it could shift the company’s overall strategic direction and priorities.
There is also speculation that Apple has set up a secret lab, with several hundred employees, working a secret project named “Titan.” Is this the development facility for an Apple self-driving car? Maybe. Maybe not.
Researching new projects and concepts is nothing new for Apple. So, it is no surprise they are looking into the possibility of developing an autonomous car. As stated in Apple Learning to Make Self-Driving Car, “Trying to build an actual car would mark a dramatic shift for the maker of the iPhone and iPad. Apple often researches projects which are then discarded, but has so far mainly stuck to its core expertise in mobile and electronic devices.”
There is no doubt that we are on the path to self-driving cars, and it’s only a matter of time before we see them on our roads. Whether it’s Apple, Google, Tesla, or many of the other car manufacturers, self-driving cars will soon become the norm.
