9 Tips to Keep Cool on a Hot Day without Turning on the AC

July 3rd, 2014  |  Home Insurance

Cranking the AC is not the only way that you can keep cool on a hot day – Even though it is likely the first thing that you think about on a hot summer day. If you do crank it all the time, you probably won’t remain cool when you see your energy bill at the end of the month.

It’s no secret that air conditioners use a lot of energy and if everyone relies on them too heavily it could lead to blackouts and overload our power grids – both things that we don’t want to happen.

Even though the air conditioner is the default way to cool down during the summer, there are many other ways you can keep cool before turning to the AC.

  1. Close your windows during the day: This will help keep the heat out during the day.
  2. Open your windows at night: If the temperature takes a dip at night, then open up your windows to let the breeze and cool air in. Just remember to close them again in the morning before the heat begins.
  3. Draw the window shades: Keeping your window shades lowered will help prevent the heat from transferring into your home.
  4. Dress appropriately: Wearing pants or a long sleeve shirt is probably not the right choice on a hot day. Wear comfortable clothing that will help keep you cool.
  5. Drink plenty of fluids: This may seem obvious, but one of the best ways to keep cool is to keep hydrated. Drink water throughout the day to help stay cool.
  6. Turn on a fan: Fans are an effective way to keep you cool. Just point them directly at you and you will cool down in to time at all!
  7. Don’t turn on the stove: The stove will immediately increase the temperature in your kitchen. When the weather is nice use the grill, microwave or consider having a cold meal.
  8. Take a cool shower: A cool shower can do wonders to keep you cool and lower your body temperature.
  9. Turn off the lights:Turning off the lights, as well as other electronics will help to keep the temperature down in your home.

Using these methods will not only keep you cool, they will also make you less reliant on the air conditioner, it’s better for the environment, and you will save money on your energy bill during the summer.

What do you do to keep cool during the summer? Do you automatically turn to the AC? What other things do you do to stay cool?
