7 travel hacks to save money on your honeymoon

May 3rd, 2017  |  Travel

Getting married is a wonderful time in your life – unfortunately for our wallets, it can also be a very expensive time. With helpful idea-websites like Pinterest, and DIY tips flooding the internet, it’s safe to say brides around the country are finding creative ways to save money on their wedding. This also goes for the honeymoon. Taking a trip as the newlywed Mr. and Mrs. is a good way to start your happily ever after, and the truth is your first vacation as husband and wife doesn’t need to be expensive.

Here are seven ways to save money on your honeymoon:

Shop around for everything

From flights to travel insurance, don’t ever purchase the first option you find because it’s probably not the best deal you can find. One of the best ways to save money is to shop around and compare prices. Just be sure to bookmark all the websites you’ve visited so you can go back and find the lowest price.

Choose alternative modes of transportation

Depending on where you’re going, flying is usually the preferred mode of travellers. However, if you want to save money on your honeymoon consider other means of transportation. If you can travel by train or car, you may be able to save big bucks. Just remember to factor in gas and overnight hotel stays if required during the road trip.

Consider all inclusive

If you’re headed south for your honeymoon, consider an all-inclusive vacation. If you take advantage of everything offered in the travel package, very often it’s much cheaper to book an all-inclusive vacation than it is to book all items individually. However, if you don’t use all the amenities, such as meals at the hotel or the open bar, it’s probably better to book your travel accommodations separately.

Try house swapping

Popular personal finance website Money Crashers says, “If accommodation is proving too costly, consider swapping homes with another couple for a week or two. You’ll have to pay for your own travel and food, but it can be a cheap way to find somewhere to stay during your honeymoon break. The big downside is that you’ll have to accept another couple staying in your house while you’re away.”

Skip the guided tour

I personally don’t like guided tours because I don’t really enjoy being told what to do, I much prefer to explore a new city at my own pace. Guided tours also seem to be extremely overpriced and it would be much cheaper to take public transportation to visit your must-see landmarks.

Spend like you’re at home

So often people overspend or spend carelessly while on vacation. Don’t let that happen on your honeymoon. If you wouldn’t buy it at home, then don’t pay for it while away. When you do make a purchase, be sure to use a currency app to factor in the foreign exchange rate to ensure you’re truly getting a good deal.

Travel off season

June may be wedding season, but it’s also prime travel season. Although it may be tradition to leave for your honeymoon the day after your wedding, there is no rule that says you need to do so. Enjoy life at home and travel off season, when it’s cheaper. This will help save money on your honeymoon.
