7 Things Travelers Always Need in their Carryon Bag

August 16th, 2015  |  Travel Insurance

Frequent flyers probably know that carryon luggage is absolutely essential to maintaining a quick and painless airport experience. But carryons are also important for those going on big vacations with multiple friends or family in tow.

Here are seven items you should have in your carryon at all times just in case your luggage gets lost or delayed.

Medications and Toiletries

It's imperative to keep any prescription medication close at hand. If you need to carry liquid prescriptions, don't worry, just declare them at the security checkpoint and they'll be permitted within reasonable quantity.

I also recommend bringing along toiletries like your toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and a comb or brush. Finally hand cream and lip balm will go a long way to keep you from looking like you've just escaped from the desert when you reach your destination.

A sweater to keep warm

If you're flying down south you might not think you'll need a sweater, but it doesn't hurt to bring one along for the plane ride. I remember a couple of times when the person sitting next to me decided to blast the air conditioning fan.  I was glad I had an extra layer just for the flight.

Valuables to keep them safe

I personally try to keep my most important valuables like my wallet with me at all times, however for those things that won't go in your pockets, keep them in your carryon.  Valuables such as jewelry, cameras and your house keys should have your eye on them at all times.

Something for your entertainment

I tend to travel with my laptop or at least my tablet. I like to watch movies when travelling.  If you don't want to lug a laptop around the airport you may want to bring smaller items for your entertainment such as a book for reading or your iPod for tunes.

An extra change of clothes or at least underwear

When traveling it's a good idea to pack change of clothes in your carryon bag. If your checked luggage gets lost or delayed you don't want to be stuck in the same clothes for several days.

My luggage has been lost a couple of times when travelling and that's why I always pack an extra pair of underwear and a change of clothes in my carryon...just in case.

Printouts of travel documents

While travelers are encouraged to go paperless in this day and age, having your important documents on paper adds an extra layer of reliability should anything go wrong. Documents you should have with you include your flight itinerary and hotel confirmation.

Snacks

While many international flights come with complimentary meals, you may find they aren't enough to fill you up.  It pays to bring your own snacks on a flight because it's cheaper than buying expensive in-flight food and you're guaranteed to get something you like.  Fruits like apples travel well and keep energy high. Granola and protein bars are other good options to keep your belly full during a flight.
