6 Ways to Stay Safe on Black Friday

November 27th, 2014  |  Insurance

Safety is increasingly being an issue on Black Friday. With millions of people competing with each other to get their hands on the best deals, parking lots jammed with cars, and no shortage of thieves looking to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers, you need to ensure you stay safe when shopping.

Consider this advice to stay safe this Black Friday:

  1.  Avoid confrontations with others people

We have all heard about the violence that unfortunately occurs on Black Friday. No item is worth getting into a fight with another person. Don’t get caught up in the mob of people – you never know what could happen. Be smart and use your common sense when shopping this year.

  2.  Be extra cautious when driving in parking lots

Parking lots will be complete mayhem on Black Friday. They will be overcrowded, pedestrians will be everywhere, and trying to find a parking spot will be a challenge. Be extra cautions when driving in parking lots – Put your phone down, watch out for other cars, people, shopping carts, and keep your eyes on the road at all times.

  3.  Stay alert

Whether you are walking down the sidewalk, through the mall or in your favorite stop, you need to stay alert at all times. Thieves will be out in mass looking for pickpocket targets. Keep a look out for suspicious people and keep your wallet secured at all times. If you notice something suspicious, contact security right away.

  4.  Don’t leave items visible in your car

It’s common for people to shop at multiple stores and go to the car frequently to put items away so they don’t have to carry them around. If you do this, make sure you place items out of sight in the trunk. Out of sight out of mind, right? This will reduce the odds of your vehicle being targeted by thieves.

  5.  Watch your step

The odds are it will be wet and slippery come Black Friday. Wear proper footwear and watch your step when going in and out of stores and when walking outside.

  6.  Bring your phone

Whether you are planning to shop with your friends or your family, make sure that everyone has their phone. This will ensure you can contact them if you go separate ways, and you can call for help if you are in a compromising situation. Plus, you can text them if you find a can’t miss deal!
