6 ways to celebrate Canada Day

June 26th, 2017  |  Travel

The big day is right around the corner. Are you excited for Canada Day? Are you ready for the special 150? It's the beginning of summer and everyone is more than ready put this year's lacklustre spring in the rear-view mirror. Whether you're ringing in the festivities on Saturday, or expanding the celebration with an extra long weekend, we've got some suggestions for making the event a memorable one.

Find a place to watch the fireworks

Are you ready for the fireworks? I’m hoping that they’re more spectacular than ever because of the occasion. Go on Google and find the best place to watch the fireworks in your area. You may end up driving a bit, but hopefully it'll be worth it. In most larger cities you can expect them to go the extra mile. Take advantage of the free entertainment and enjoy a beautiful summer evening.

Bring your blanket and a sweater so that you can enjoy the fireworks without dealing with the mosquitos.

Attend a ribfest or local event

If you're in Toronto and have an affinity for BBQ, check out Ribfest. This is an easy excuse to eat ribs and pulled pork. and have a good time with friends. You can find some sort of a ribfest or festival that’s happening in your community. I can almost guarantee you that there won’t be a shortage of events to attend this year for Canada Day. They may not all be ribtastic, but many communities will host events that offer food and drink.

Go camping

If you're not so much into crowds, you can avoid the busy streets and hustle of a major city by getting away with some close friends for the weekend. You can go camping and setup your own event. You guys can pitch in for your own fireworks and food to cook.

Host a community meetup

Have you thought about bringing the neighbours together? You can host a potluck and invite everyone to bring something. One person can be in charge of the cold beverages while someone else covers the fireworks. This is an excellent chance to bring new and old friends together to celebrate.

See a new part of the country

One of the coolest things about Canada is its sheer vastness. There are so many natural splendors and such a great collection of cities and towns to visit. Why not take a road trip around your province, or cross the country to see some place you've never visited. Just remember to get travel insurance if you cross provincial lines.

Check out the baseball game

If you're a Jays fan, you might want to head to the Roger's Centre to catch them take on the Red Sox. The atmosphere for Canada Day games is always pretty intense.

Cheers to celebrating Canada Day and to a (hopefully) fantastic summer with plenty of laughs and good times. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and to apply sunscreen.
