6 Tips to Avoid Traffic on Ontario Roadways

June 24th, 2012  |  Insurance

No one wants to spend time in traffic when they don’t have to, or at all for that matter. However, if you live in a busy city like Toronto or in the GTA, traffic is part of your daily commute to and from work.

Therefore, you need to factor in traffic into your daily life. You need to take the time to discover alternative routes when your normal route is backed up and understand when certain areas should be avoided. The truth is that no matter where you live, you know the areas that cause issues on a regular basis.

And, if you spend too much time in these congested areas, the odds of you becoming involved in a traffic delay or even an accident will increase. No one wants to get into an accident and see their auto insurance rates go up when it can be avoided.

Here are some tips to help you avoid traffic in your area:

  • Check the traffic before you leave: Make checking the traffic report part of your morning ritual. Check out CP24 if you live in the GTA or use Google maps live traffic updates to check out traffic conditions. You can also use the Ministry of Transportation traffic report.

  • Try a new route: Sometimes avoiding traffic can be as easy as changing your current route. Give it a try.

  • Have a Plan B and C: Map out a few alternative routes that you can take if traffic is backed up. Also, become familiar with a couple turn offs that you can use to go around traffic if it is backed up in a specific area.

  • Use your GPS: Use your GPS to get traffic updates. Many can provide you with routes that have the least amount of traffic. Many smartphones also have this option.

  • Adjust your timing: If your workplace allows it, adjust your working hours so you can avoid rush hour traffic. You would be surprised how much of a difference even 30 minutes can make.

  • Consider public transportation: One last ditch effort to avoid traffic is to use public transportation instead. However, this may not be a viable option, depending on where you live.
