6 great places to have a winter vacation in Canada

February 27th, 2017  |  Travel

If you want to get away this winter, which destinations are on your list – Mexico, Europe, the Caribbean? Maybe. Some Canadians like to pack their bags and head south to warmer climates during the cold winter months, but what if you want to stay local – for the current price of the dollar, among other things. Before you contact your travel agent, purchase travel insurance and book your next vacation, think about staying local and plan a winter vacation in Canada.

Here are six destinations for your next winter vacation in Canada:

Whistler, British Columbia

Whistler is a small area in British Columbia known for it’s picturesque mountain scenery and premier downhill skiing. Whistler is only a couple hours north of Vancouver, which makes it a convenient spot for a family vacation – a family that loves the outdoors. After a day on the slopes visitors can enjoy an evening of shopping and cuisine at local boutiques and restaurants.

Banff, Alberta

How could we not mention Banff when talking about planning a Canadian vacation in 2017. The Rocky Mountains are a major tourist attraction and they’re located in Alberta. If travelling to central Canada doesn’t sound like something you want to do, just Google images of Banff, Alberta. Trust me, you’ll be mesmerized by the beautiful scenery. The town is located in Banff National Park and is home to chateau-style hotels, restaurants and grizzly bears – among other things.

Anglin Lake, Saskatchewan

If you think dog sledding – also known as mushing - is just an activity for residents and tourists near the North Pole, think again. Anglin Lake is home to dog sled adventures during the winter months. If you want to be led by a pack of energetic dogs through snow-filled terrains and explore beautiful scenery, then book a dog sledding adventure for your next winter vacation in Canada.

Ottawa, Ontario

There are several great tourist spots in our nation’s capital, such as the Parliament Buildings. One of the biggest attractions during the winter time is the Rideau Canal. Each year over one million people skate down the 7.8-kilometer canal when it’s frozen. Enjoy delicious food and hot beverages while spending the day outside and getting some fresh air in Ottawa.

Quebec City, Quebec

You may have heard of Bonhomme de Neiges, which means snowman in French. Well, he’s the mascot of the Winter Carnival in Quebec City. Over 1 million local and international tourists attend the Quebec Winter Carnival each year to enjoy outdoor activities, such as snow tubing, delicious food and the historic architecture.

Cobequid Hills, Nova Scotia

What could be more Canadian than tapping for maple syrup? Although several provinces offer this experience, Sugar Moon Farm in northern Nova Scotia is by far one of the best experiences, says Reader’s Digest. “Learn all about the art of maple syrup – and sample the yummy results. Only 90 minutes from Halifax, Sugar Moon Farm offers warm hospitality along with their sugar camp tours, all-day brunch, maple-tasting experiences and hiking trails.”
